Regional Affordable Housing Summit

The Prince Rupert Labour Council identified affordable housing as a priority for 2021-22 and launched the North Coast Affordable Housing Campaign in March 2021. Our first step was to hold a series of Town Hall Forums on the housing crisis throughout the North Coast region. These forums brought workers together as community members to hear from organizers, residents, and government leaders on the affordability crisis. The forums centred on the following themes:

  • THE HOUSING CRISIS: WHAT’S GOING ON?
  • ENDING HOMELESSNESS IN THE NORTH COAST REGION
  • WHAT CAN WE DO TO END THE HOUSING CRISIS IN OUR REGION AND BEYOND?

The next step is for workers to come together with housing advocates to develop a set of proposed criteria for action. These criteria can guide how the Labour Council and local unions work with the community to achieve affordable housing for our region and beyond. With criteria in place, each local union can adopt a united call to action – which the Labour Council can then help put forward on behalf of local unions and working families throughout the North Coast region.
